INDUSTRIAL FOUNDATION

There are two groups in Mount Pleasant with economic development as their primary focus. Those organizations are the Mount Pleasant Industrial Foundation ("IF") and the Mount Pleasant Industrial Development Corp. ("IDC"). The IF was formed in 1967 by a group of local business persons working with the City and County. They raised private funds to purchase the Cypress Industrial Park. The tradition of private business supporting economic development continues today. Funds are donated to staff the IF offices and give direction to overall effort. The organization is governed by the IF's Executive Committee.

In 1993 the citizens of Mount Pleasant indicated their desire to advance the community through aggressive economic development efforts. The citizens voted overwhelmingly to authorize the City to form a Development Corporation and support its activities with a 3/8 cent sales tax. Since 1993 the IDC has assisted a number of manufacturing companies and major distribution operations to locate in the area. They have also acquired land for the development of the Mount Pleasant Regional Airport feeling that excellent Interstate access coupled with a first class private airport would give business the best opportunities available in the northeast corner of Texas. The airport opened in 2002 with excellent facilities and a 5,000 ft. runway. The IDC continues to support primary business today with improvements to infrastructure and plans for an Industrial Airpark adjacent to the airport.

Two organizations with one common goal would be the best way to describe Mount Pleasant's economic development activity. Private business volunteers and government working together with a goal of assisting existing industry and locating new industry which offers new opportunities for the community.

Economic Development efforts are organized and staffed by the IF located within the offices of the Chamber of Commerce. Charles Smith serves as the executive director and brings over fifteen years experience in economic development to the organization.
